Well, I have certainly gotten behind on blogging! Taking pictures of my students' art has not been at the top of my to do list for the past few months.
I just picked up my students' artwork last night from the Youth Art Month exhibit at the Indiana Statehouse. I was able to enter 5 pieces, and I was excited that my 3rd grade student won an honorable mention award! Since this is a large, state-wide art show, any award is a huge accomplishment. I am proud of my student's work!
Here are the 5 pieces I submitted:

2017 YAM Celebration at the Indiana Statehouse
Each year, the Youth Art Month celebration at the Indiana Statehouse is one of the most exciting art shows my students participate in. I am only allowed to submit 5 pieces, which is hard, since I teach 7 different grade levels! The art show reception was yesterday, and the students' art will be on display at the Statehouse until March 25. The Statehouse is open 8-5 on weekdays, if anyone is in Indianapolis, and wants to pop in and see the art! These are the pieces from CES in the exhibit.

2017 TAF Art Show!
Every year, the Tippecanoe Arts Federation invites schools from Tippecanoe and surrounding counties to participate in their annual Youth Art Month student art exhibit! It's a very fun show; I worked alongside many other area art teachers in grades K-8 last night to hang the show. TAF has a great gallery space and accepts 2D and 3D art for the show. Tonight is the opening reception! Below are 12 submissions from CES. If you are in Lafayette between now and March 24, I encourage you to check out the exhibit. TAF's gallery hours are M-F 9-5.

Artist in Residence Week
Last week, my students had the wonderful privilege of having an artist visit our school through a generous donation from Psi Iota Xi. "Artist in Residence" Justin Vining showed the students some of his methods for painting landscapes from life, which included painting almost everything with a 1/2" flat brush! He showed the students how to make skinny lines and wide lines with the same brush. After some demonstrating in the classroom, we loaded our students up on a bus, and took a short field trip to nearby Adam's Mill to do some plein air painting. It was a blast!
Here are some results from 6th grade. All of the paintings are tempera on canvas.

Here are paintings by 5th graders:
3rd and 4th grade got rained out! Instead of taking a field trip to Adam's Mill, they painted barns here at school with our visiting artist. Justin Vining paints a lot of barns, so the students learned some of his special techniques, and painted a barn using what they learned. Here are some 4th grade barns:
And lastly, here are the 3rd grade students' barns:
At the end of the week, we hung all of the paintings on the walls of our elementary school, and had an art show on Friday night! Lots of families came to see the students' work. We had a really great week, thanks to the generosity of Psi Iota Xi!
