My first grade students recently looked at a landscape by Thomas Cole. They learned that a landscape is a picture of the land, and everything on it, and the sky above it. Looking at Thomas Cole's landscape, the students noticed many details: plants, trees, houses, animals, etc. Then, the students began their own landscape by painting green ground and white clouds on a light blue paper. The following week, the students added lots of details, including roads, fences, houses, people, and animals. We used tempera paint for everything.
