Warm and Cool Colors with 6th Grade
My 6th grade students recently learned about an artist from South Carolina, Drew Brophy. Drew Brophy is a an avid surfer and an artist. His art career took off when he started painting designs for surfboards. It is now possible to purchase a surfboard with one of his beautiful paintings printed on it! The students noticed how he often used warm colors in the sky to contrast with cool colors in the ocean. Then, the students made their own ocean paintings, using only warm colors in the sky, and only cool colors in the ocean to create contrast. The students learned that when you mix two cool colors, the new color you make is also cool. Also, when you mix two warm colors together, you get another warm color. I encouraged the students to mix colors for their paintings.

I love this!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me feel so warm! And since it is so cold outside I could look at these all night.
Pinning!
This project is awesome! I like the connection to a real-world artist (who is still alive). Thanks for the great idea! :)
ReplyDeleteThese look really great but how did you get the kids to draw the waves, and all so different. I find if I give too much free reign to students in art, they often don't know what to do...what is your secret?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Meg! I think my students do very well. My "secret" for this lesson is I created three examples, all different waves, and showed all three (after viewing Drew Brophy's art). Then, I demonstrated on the chalkboard how to draw each of the three examples. Finally, I demonstrated ways to combine the ideas. All along, I was clear that the students were to design the wave how they wanted, not copy mine exactly. Mine are ideas, not the "right" or "wrong" way. Then, the students began drawing their waves lightly with pencil. Once the waves were ok, they showed me their art, and I would let them begin tracing their design in black if it was good. Sometimes, I asked the students to fix a few small things; other times, the art was excellent already! When it came to painting, the students had to use only cool colors in the ocean; I gave them various colors they could mix (lt. blue, dark blue, green, violet) and they painted sections in the ocean. We did the warm colors in the sky a different day in order to not accidentally mix the warm and cool colors.
DeleteThis is amazing!
DeleteWould you be willing to show me a simple version of the 3 wave styles you presented to the kids?
I love this - definitely hoping to try it out with a class sometime. Could you tell me what sized paper you use? Thanks!
ReplyDelete9"x12", but I'm sure it would work fine on other sizes as well!
DeleteThank you so much for these wave ideas. Our classroom has just been christened Wave Room, as we are near the sea. And these ideas are just what I need for them to illustrate it. Thank you for the instructions. My students are younger but I am sure they will manage. Your pictures look stunning.
ReplyDeleteHi - these are awesome! What kind of paint did you use?
ReplyDeleteI particularly liked how you explained the differences between warm and cool colors using relatable examples like hot and cold temperatures.
